Ashland is located in the foothills of the Siskiyou and Cascade ranges and about 15 miles north of the California border on I-5. The city is 350 miles north of San Francisco and 285 miles south of Portland in an area that at one time was proposed to become the State of Jefferson. Ashland is 90 miles from Crater Lake National Park and Oregon Caves National Monument.
According to the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.5 square miles, of which none is covered with water.

Ashland is in Jackson County located in the south end of the Rogue Valley. It was named after Ashland County, Ohio, where Abel Helman and other founders of Ashland settled. Secondarily it was named for Ashland, Kentucky, where other founders had family ties. In 1855 the town was officially named Ashland Mills. The 2007 census estimate is 21,630 residents. It is the home of Southern Oregon University and internationally renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival that draws thousands of visitors each year.
