Coos Bay is the largest of the communities that encompass Oregon's Bay Area. The city was founded in the 1850's, and was named Marshfield after the Massachusetts hometown of the city's founder J. C. Tolman. The city was incorporated in 1874 under the name Marshfield and in 1944 residents voted to change the name to Coos Bay.
