Spend summer in a charming duplex a few blocks from the Santa Cruz beach in California's Monterey Bay. The home is furnished comfortably with a mix of antiques and good furniture and a lot of art. Its a pretty place with a bright, skylit, highly-functional kitchen with renovated O'Keefe & Merrit stove with warming shelf and griddle, large refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, etc. The tiled bathroom has a large skylight and deep clawfoot tub(no shower). There is a comfy living room with TV/DVD and sound system, leather couch and other big sinkinable upholstered chairs. The dining room has a smallish antique table suitable for three that's expandable with good antique ladderback chairs. One large bedroom has become a charming queen bedroom on one side and sitting room on the other, with bay windows and a sliding glass door to the large backyard with avocado, orange, lemon and walnut trees and lots of flowers.
Also great for those who like relaxing at outdoor restaurants, visits to San Francisco, San Jose (30 minutes away) or Monterey/Carmel (45min), or just sunbathing at the beach or in the garden. This house has a big wild garden in the back with veggies planted and the aforementioned fruit trees, and an interesting one in front, there are two pretty parks within a few blocks.
The second bedroom in the house has been converted to an office/studio/sewing room jammed with art supplies and books stuff, so not much of a second bedroom...but the desk is waiting for your own laptop and boy do you have reading material. We could discuss use of some of the art supplies too--I'll never be a painter (I'm a sculptor).
This home is suitable for a single or a couple--with a baby would be fine. (The one bathroom is very close to the bedroom.) No pets please.
The place has wifi and cable tv.

Santa Cruz is a quirky, beautiful place with a LOT going on if you wish, or with beach, redwoods, a gorgeous university (UCSC) and a pristine oceanfront highway to San Francisco north (1.25 hr) or to Big Sur (1.5hr) south if you prefer poking around the Bay area. Public swimming pool, fine golf course and tennis courts are blocks away.
The duplex shares a large common area in front with another duplex beside us...but most of the rest of the houses on the street are Victorian-style buildings, and only a block away this street turns into a "great address" with gated mansions etc...but on this block it's just a nice, friendly, attractive neighborhood minutes from the beach and downtown, all in a very artsy milieu. At the end of this block there is a well-known store called Shoppers Corner that has been there forever, a fabulous friendly store with butcher, greengrocer, lots of organic produce and a legendary wine selection. Across the street from that, The Buttery is a coffee-bakery and local hang-out, also selling delectable savories to eat there or take away. Another block, it's the Whole Foods supermarket. A short walk...let's say 8 minutes, four long blocks away is the quaint Santa Cruz downtown with lots of restaurants, many quite good, some excellent, clothing etc stores and a lively nightclub/bar scene. In another direction, a shorter walk takes you to the San Lorenzo River as it meets the Bay at The Boardwalk (a century-old amusement park, very popular), a Municipal Pier and some great beaches. A few blocks from the Pier is the legendary Steamers Lane surf spot and the Surf Museum. There is a rivalry between Santa Cruz and a southern California beach town about who REALLY is "Surf City U.S.A".). Of course that's us.
This is the perfect location for physically active visitors who love to hike (beach or the Santa Cruz Mountains--redwood forests--or an hour or so away such hikes as The Pinnacles, a unique geological spot), swim, kayak (the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary spills into an amazing estuary, Elkhorn Slough at Half Moon Bay, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, where it's great to kayak and visit the birds, sealions, otters, etc...but in fact there are kayak rentals and lessons from Santa Cruz beach too.) Or rent a surfboard and have surf lessons. Did I mention sailing? There's a harbor and a little local regatta every Wednesday evening till just after sunset. Sit at a table overlooking the harbor for an evening watching the water and the sky.
gardens front and back, avocados, lemons and oranges, herbs and vegetables in season; washer and dryer, clawfoot tub, antique but beautifully functional stove with warming shelf and griddle, larger fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, all dishes, cookware, condiments, linens, TV/VCR/DVD with cable. WiFi available, printer; art supplies and many many books.
Mazda Miata is available by arrangement for stays of a month or longer
