Located on the banks of the Deschutes River at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain range, Bend is a lively community with a rapidly growing population of over 77,000. To the east of Bend is the high desert and to the west is Forest Service land. Bend is the county seat of Deschutes County and covers 32 square miles.

Bend was founded in 1904 by a universal vote by the community’s 300 residents. It was incorporated on January 4, 1905. Twelve years afterward, Deschutes County was formed from the western half of Crook County, and Bend was elected the County Seat.

Mount Bachelor, previously named Bachelor Butte, is a volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc in the Cascade Mountain Range. The Mount Bachelor ski area has operated at the mountain since 1958. Mount Bachelor ski area operates chairlifts to the summit during the summer months for mountain biking as well as during the ski and snowboard season. The resort is one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest with a skiable area of 3,683 acres and a vertical drop of 3,365 feet.
